Operational support for renewables will require fewer staff than O&G

May 21 2021

Contrasting manning requirements for the offshore wind industry with offshore oil and gas facilities emphasises the difference between these two sectors, notwithstanding the fact that they are both located offshore and involve physical structures in a hostile marine environment.

Some large O&G platforms have ~200 people on them at any one time, and a report from Oil and Gas UK in 2018 indicated that of the ~280k employed in the UK offshore industry, around 50k people travelled offshore. However, with offshore renewable generation, on location staffing will be negligible as most (if not all) offshore installations will be unmanned.

The energy transition is not just a simple switch to a different energy source - the technology and how it is used will be completely different.

While many companies with offshore experience will be looking at the renewables opportunities with interest, there are more challenges to be overcome than might be expected. If you need to discuss the impact and challenges of the energy transition on your business, talk to us.
